Community Tree Planting

Since 2018, we have focused on bringing trees and plants to the areas where they can have the most social and environmental impact. Our focus is where the need for trees, greening, community health, and human well-being is the greatest. Currently, our primary focus is on the neighborhoods of Hilltop, Eastside, South Tacoma, South End, and Parkland.

  • In the Fall and Spring we host a number of tree shares where you can pick up a free tree or shrub to take home!

  • This is our biggest annual tree share, where you can pick up beautiful trees, or get them delivered to you. We will have volunteers available to help with planting if desired as well, or you can help plant a tree!

  • There are so many ways to get a free or discounted tree from us or our partners. Learn more about this collaboration here.

Education

Learn more about tree equity, and the trees that call tacoma home with our community programming! Supported by Tacoma Creates.

  • Through a nine hour training program, our community tree champions learn proper planting techniques, tree care best practices, local regulations, and how to answer tree-related questions. Tacoma Tree Foundation works with community tree stewards to implement and maintain neighborhood plantings. This training happens once a year.

  • GRIT is a project dedicated to finding out how health and increasing greenery are related. The South Tacoma Mall Neighborhood is of the lowest tree canopied areas in Tacoma which is why us and our partners are planting 300 trees in the neighborhood and are finding how that impacts people’s health, happiness, and urban heat.
If you live in the Tacoma Mall Neighborhood you could get compensated for helping this project!

  • We are launching the Tacoma Climate Leadership Cohort this year because we want to give frontline* community members a training opportunity (with a $595 stipend) on how to organize around climate change in our community. This includes organizing around equitable housing, green and good paying jobs, and healthcare. Apply and learn more by Oct 9th by clicking the image above (BIPOC and low-income community members especially encouraged to apply).

  • Nature Explorers is our kid oriented website that has lessons about local nature! Find out about how trees communicate, what animals you can spot in the spring, how to make a bee home, and print zines (mini-magazines) handmade by Tacoma artists. We also have in-person events a few times a season.

  • We regularly host webinars from local experts on things like urban heat, tree equity, the benefits of trees, and so much more. Watch all our past webinars at your leisure on our youtube page.

  • Throughout the year we take Tree Walks across Tacoma. Participants get to learn some of the names and stories of the trees that make this place home!

  • Find out about Earth Month events from community and environmental organizations all over the South Sound! Plus learn about activities you can do at home.
